A 20-kilometer crack tore it away from Sakhalin Island.
In the south of Sakhalin Island, an ice floe tore away on the afternoon of February 12, on which, according to preliminary data, about 300 people were fishing. The ice floe is carried away to the Sea of Okhotsk, the Russian Emergencies Ministry Telegram channel reported.
“Six rescuers and four pieces of equipment from the Russian Emergencies Ministry have left for the scene. A departmental Mi-8 helicopter is preparing to take off from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk,” the Russian Emergencies Ministry reported.
The crack in the ice floe ran from the village of Malki to the mouth of the Dolinka River. According to Yandex maps, this distance is about 20 km.
The Shot Telegram channel, citing eyewitnesses, wrote that the crack formed suddenly and began to grow rapidly.
Some of the fishermen managed to jump over the crack that had begun to spread, while the rest, along with their cars and snowmobiles, were carried out to sea.
The Sakhalin Department of Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring warned on February 11 that in Mordvinov Bay, where the crack had formed, “there is dense drifting ice,” and in connection with this, the Ministry of Emergency Situations published a warning on Telegram about the ban on going out on the ice.
The fishermen apparently did not read this.
