If Putin derails peace talks.
The US will impose new sanctions on Russia and send US troops to Ukraine if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not agree to end the war and derail peace talks, US Vice President J.D. Vance said.
‘There is economic leverage, there is certainly military leverage,’ he told the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
According to Vance, President Donald Trump's administration will seek to convince Putin that Russia will achieve more at the negotiating table than on the battlefield.
He said that if a successful agreement on Ukraine is reached, the US could reset relations with Russia, as Moscow's current isolation from Western countries makes it a junior partner to Beijing.
‘It is not in Putin's interest to be the younger brother in a coalition with China,’ Vance explained.
At the same time, the vice president refused to talk about the possible parameters of the peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. According to him, it is still not clear what part of the occupied Ukrainian territory will remain under Russian control and what security guarantees Kyiv will receive from the United States and other Western allies.
‘There are as many formulations, configurations as you want, but our concern is that Ukraine remains sovereign and independent,’ Vance said.
At the same time, he said Trump has ‘no blinders on’ - he is ready to discuss any options, but can change his mind on certain issues during negotiations. ‘I think a deal will come out of this that will shock a lot of people,’ the US vice president warned.
Trump had his first official phone conversation with Putin on 12 February after assuming the presidency. Following the conversation, which lasted an hour and a half, Trump said he had agreed with the Russian president that the two countries' teams would begin talks immediately to resolve the military conflict. The day before, the US president announced two meetings between senior US officials and representatives of Russia and Ukraine. According to him, they are to be held in Munich at a security conference on 14 February and next week in Saudi Arabia. However, Kyiv said that there would be no meeting with the Russian delegation in Munich because Kyiv needs to agree its position with Washington and European capitals to start negotiations with Moscow.
