The dictator is on shaky ground.
The news that the US is negotiating a deal with the Lukashenka regime came as a bit of a surprise. The New York Times, in particular, reported that, under the terms of the deal, Lukashenka will release a significant number of political prisoners and even stop the policy of repression, and the US will cancel (or ease) sanctions against the potash industry and banks of Belarus.
The deal, according to the American side, will allow Lukashenka to distance from Russia.
Political analyst Alexander Friedman believes that the leaked information itself indicates that the deal is still a long way off.
"Its implementation could benefit Belarus and would be political suicide for Aliaksandr Lukashenka," Alexander Friedman notes.
By abandoning repression, he will thoroughly saw off the branch he climbed onto in 2020, and Russia, in the current geopolitical conditions, is unlikely to allow him to distance himself.
