President Of The European Parliament: Europe Ready To Confront China Or Russia Even Without The U.S.

Strengthening defence and security is our top priority.

Europe is ready to independently confront threats from China or Russia if the US decides to reduce its contribution to collective security.

This was stated by the head of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

"Strengthening our defence and security is our top priority," she said.

According to her, in recent years the EU has increased its overall defence spending by 30% and made significant progress in joint defence procurement and expanding ammunition production. Through the European Defense Fund, member states are supported in developing innovative and compatible defence technologies and equipment.

"Moreover, for the first time, we have a European Commissioner for Defense, and the European Parliament has elevated its defense subcommittee to a full committee. These were significant steps, but more needs to be done—and we will do it," Metsola added.

The European Parliament President noted that the EU's real problem is fragmentation. "While the US uses 30 weapons systems, Europe has 178. Fragmentation means higher costs and inefficiencies. We need a single market for the defence industry. Because, as Prime Minister Tusk aptly said: the time for geopolitical outsourcing is over," Metsola said.

"So, to answer your question: we will be ready," she said in response to a question about whether Europe would be able to counter threats from China or Russia on its own.
