Rubio Announces Key Issue In Negotiations To End War In Ukraine
MARCO RUBIO

The US intends to ask it to Moscow and Kyiv.

The topic of future negotiations between Russia and the United States should be the question of what Moscow is ready to do to end the war in Ukraine. At the same time, a similar question should be posed to official Kyiv.

This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Breitbart News reported.

He noted that at the General Assembly meeting, the US voted against the UN resolution that condemned Russia for the war in Ukraine because it was ‘antagonistic’ and contradicted efforts to bring both sides to the negotiating table and stop the war.

‘In terms of a broader resolution, we think the UN should go back. If it wants to be useful in the 21st century, the UN must return to its statutory mission, which is to prevent and end wars and conflicts,’ Rubio said.

In this context, he emphasised that President Donald Trump ‘made it clear a long time ago that he wants to end the war’, because ‘too many people have died, and he wants to put an end to it’.

At the same time, the head of US diplomacy called unfavourable ‘something antagonistic in the UN to either side’.

‘We tried to put these guys at the negotiating table. Unfortunately, Ukraine did not agree, and they wanted to stick further to their point of view. So then we went to the Security Council with our compromise, which I think is a very fair formulation and predominantly says ‘war is a terrible thing.’ I think it's a good thing that we were able to do in the Security Council and the Russians didn't veto it,’ Rubio said.

The US Secretary of State once again called Trump ‘the president of peace’ and did not rule out that the war in Ukraine could end in a few weeks.

For that to happen, according to Rubio, ‘we have to put both sides at the negotiating table, starting with the Russians.’ He said the U.S. delegation met with Russian delegates last week and the main question of that meeting was, ‘Are you interested in ending this conflict or not?’

‘A lot of people don't know the answer to that question. If you talk to some Europeans, they will tell you that Putin is not interested in ending the war. They said they would be interested, but under certain conditions. We haven't discussed what those conditions are. So the next step is to meet with them again at some point, with the right group of people, and start outlining what needs to be done to get Russia to end the war. Obviously, we have to put the same question to Ukraine, because you cannot stop the war unless both sides agree to it,’ the US diplomatic chief said.
