Canada Imposes Sanctions Against Putin's Niece, 109 Shadow Tankers

The new restrictions have affected more than 70 individuals and companies.

The Canadian authorities, following the European Union, Australia and the UK, have expanded sanctions lists against Russia. The new restrictions concern more than 70 individuals and companies, as well as more than a hundred ‘shadow’ tankers of the Russian Federation. The sanctions were timed to coincide with the third anniversary of the beginning of the war in Ukraine, The Moscow Times reported.

Anna Tsivileva, the niece of Russian President Vladimir Putin's deputy defence minister, her son from her first marriage Dmitry Loginov and her husband, Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev, as well as Alexei Goreslavsky, head of the Internet Development Institute (IDI), journalist and TV presenter Vladimir Pozner, President of the Russian Ski Racing Federation Elena Vyalbe, Governor of the Primorsky Territory Oleg Kozhemyako, billionaire Igor Altushkin, founder of the Russian Copper Company, political technologist Ilya Gambashidze, Director General of the ANO Dialogue, Vladimir Tabak, and others are under Canadian sanctions.

In addition, German journalist Hubert Seipel, who wrote two books about Vladimir Putin for a fee from billionaire Alexei Mordashov, has fallen under the new sanctions.

The Canadian government's website says the new sanction list members support Russia's invasion of Ukraine by helping Russia's military-industrial complex, as well as taking part in ‘the illegal deportation and forced displacement of Ukrainian children in temporarily occupied territories or contributing to Russia's efforts to spread propaganda to manipulate public opinion.’

The sanctions were also imposed on the Russian Air and Space Forces and the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Defence Forces, the Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation, the Russian Copper Company, the Artek children's camp, the Dialogue Autonomous Nonprofit Organisation, and the Internet Development Institute, which support the Kremlin's propaganda projects, including those on the war in Ukraine.

In addition, 109 vessels from Russia's ‘shadow fleet’, the oldest of which was built in 1978, have fallen under the restrictions.

The new restrictions were imposed to ‘keep the pressure on Russia,’ Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said. The list includes individuals and organisations ‘supporting the Kremlin's military-industrial base’, he said.

The day before, the UK and Australia introduced the largest packages of anti-Russian sanctions during the war, and the EU also announced the 16th package of sanctions against Russia.
