French Finance Minister Eric Lombard said he expects the US to provide support for European troops after a ceasefire agreement is reached between Ukraine and Russia, Bloomberg reports.

The UK, Germany, France and other European countries are ready to send troops to ensure the ceasefire, Lombard told Bloomberg Television in an interview in Cape Town, where he is taking part in a meeting of G20 finance ministers.

“If we want the ceasefire to hold, we need US support. I believe the Americans have agreed to this,” the French minister added.

Earlier this week, Lombard accompanied French President Emmanuel Macron to Washington, where Ukraine issues were discussed.

Macron himself said in an interview with Fox News that a truce could be concluded “in the coming weeks.”

“If it is not observed, then this will be the best proof that Russia does not take this seriously,” the BBC Russian Service quotes Macron as saying.

According to the French president, during the ceasefire it will be possible to hold talks on long-term peace, security guarantees, territory and the restoration of Ukraine.

At the same time, Macron noted that any peace agreement should not “be a capitulation of Ukraine” and must be backed by security guarantees.
