USA Aims At Weakening Russia-China Ties

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced such a need.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said it is necessary to weaken ties between China and Russia. However, this should be done without sowing dissent between the neighbours, who possess nuclear weapons.

‘I don't know if we will ever be able to detach them (Russia, - ed.) completely from the relationship with China. I also don't think that having China and Russia feeding on each other is good for global stability, because they are both nuclear powers,’ Rubio said.

He said the close ties between China and Russia could pose a problem for the US if Moscow becomes Beijing's ‘permanent junior partner’ because it would then be a unification of the two nuclear powers against Washington.

‘We could end up in a situation where regardless of whether Russia wants to improve its relations with the US or not, it cannot do so because it will become totally dependent on the Chinese because we have cut them off. The best outcome for us is to have a relationship with Russia,’ Rubio said.

Relations between China and the US

It is worth noting that relations between the US and China are characterised by complex dynamics. These countries cooperate from time to time, but there is still competition for leadership between them.

In particular, China recently offered the countries its assistance to implement programmes that were left without funding following the Donald Trump administration's decision to terminate USAID.
