Chaly: Lukashenka Is Leading The Country To Degradation And Stagnation
SIARHEI CHALY

Belarusian trade is setting one anti-record after another.

In 2024, Belarus' negative foreign trade balance almost doubled — to $5.4 billion. At the same time, according to Foreign Minister Maksim Ryzhankou, Russia accounts for up to 70% of Belarus's foreign trade. And all of Aliaksandr Lukashenka's “fateful” trips to the countries of the “far arc” turned out to be a “zilch”.

“It seems to me that we are seeing the beginning of the same trend that was in Russia and is beginning to infect the Belarusian economy,” analyst Siarhei Chaly explains the situation in his author's program “Chaly: Economy” on the BRC channel.

The trend, according to him, is that both the Belarusian and Russian markets are gradually being captured by Chinese manufacturers.

“Without Chinese machines, spare parts and technologies, nothing works for us anymore,” says the analyst.

As an example, he cited the implementation of the state program “One District - One Project”, according to which a new industrial facility with innovative production should be created in each region of Belarus.

And as part of the implementation of this program, Baranavichy officials reported on the construction of a line for the production of refrigeration equipment from the Chinese company “Mideya”.

“China again. We will produce Chinese goods from Chinese spare parts on Chinese equipment. And then it will all end with you buying Chinese, not even produced in Belarus,” says Chaly.

The second example concerns “Bellesbumprom”. The chairman of the concern reported that preparations are currently underway for the construction of a new plant for the production of sulfate pulp with a capacity of at least 700 thousand tons.

“But we already have a plant. You just reported that you, with great difficulty, launched a similar production, which has not yet reached its design capacity...

...Now it is even dangerous to joke about this topic. Because you joke, and then it becomes life. That's when I said that after modernization we get such factories that later, as in the joke, "it is easier to give birth to new ones than to wash away the old ones.” Well, that's what they do," Chaly says ironically.

The third, perhaps the most blatant example of irrational use of state resources is the situation with the nuclear power plant built with Russian loans. The Belarusian authorities can't get the first Belarusian NPP to operate smoothly, and Lukashenka is already saying that a second one needs to be built.

“We are entering a period that is even worse than the Soviet stagnation,” Chaly believes. According to him, the country is sliding into an era of “degradation and stagnation.”

But instead of thinking about development prospects, Lukashenka demands immediate results from officials, and they are already making do as best they can.
