Zelensky Presents Initial Steps For Peace in Ukraine

The Ukrainian President spoke at a meeting of the European Council.

Ukraine proposed "the necessary steps to establish peace" and is ready to take them. This was announced at a meeting of the European Council on March 6 by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the transcript of his speech was published by his press service.

According to the Ukrainian President, there are several such steps.

"Everyone must make sure that Russia [the aggressor country], as the only source of this war, recognizes the need to end it. This can be proven by two types of silence that are easy to establish and control, namely: the absence of attacks on energy and other civilian infrastructure, that is, a truce with respect to the use of missiles, bombs and long-range drones, and the second — a truce on the water, that is, the cessation of military operations in the Black Sea," he explained.

Zelensky called the next step "basic trust in the circumstances in which the negotiations are taking place," that is, making sure that the Russians are not lying. The release of prisoners can be such a means of establishing trust, the Ukrainian president believes.

"And this should be based on the understanding that any ceasefire and any form of confidence-building measures can only be a prologue to a full and fair settlement, to a comprehensive agreement on security guarantees and an end to the war," he said.

Zelensky assured that Ukraine would share all the details of the peace plans and the negotiation process with Europe. He stressed that each of the states that helps Ukraine should join the peace process.

In addition, he called on Europe to support the position that any issues related to Ukraine's security should be resolved with the participation of Kyiv.

Zelensky also thanked European countries for their determination to help Ukraine, welcomed the efforts of the European Commission to rearm Europe, calling them "the right initiative," and called for a significant portion of defense funds to be allocated for the production of weapons in Ukraine.

"Our industrial capacities are the fastest and most relevant, given modern security threats," the president stressed.

He said that the format of the European armed forces will be based on the strength of national armies and the experience of deploying partner contingents in Ukraine. This is what Ukraine is working on with its European partners, he said.
