A historic event took place this week.

By approving the European Commission's Rearm Europe proposal, which allocates €800 billion for defense investments, the European Union has laid the groundwork for the possible creation of a European Defense Union.

As reported by European Pravda, this was announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Von der Leyen emphasized that this week marked a historic moment, as the approval of her Rearm Europe plan established the foundation for a European Defense Union.

“This week brought unanimous support for the Rearm Europe program. You are already familiar with the €800 billion defense package. And this is a historic event. It could become the cornerstone of a European Defense Union,” stated the European Commission President.

“The direction has always been clear. What has changed over the past 100 days is a new sense of urgency… Our European values—democracy, freedom, and the rule of law—are under threat. Our ironclad commitments are being questioned. Everything has become transactional. The pace of change has accelerated, and the necessary actions must be bold and decisive,” she said.

“If we can unite with like-minded countries such as the United Kingdom, Norway, or Canada, the potential will be even greater. It is important to note that economic strength and the plan to rearm Europe are two sides of the same coin,” von der Leyen asserted.

One key aspect of the plan includes the creation of a new €150 billion fund in the form of loans to EU countries for defense investments. These investments would focus on air and missile defense, artillery systems, missiles and ammunition, drones and anti-drone systems, as well as other critical needs ranging from cybersecurity to military mobility.

The European Commission is also proposing to lift restrictions imposed by EU budget rules on government spending for defense investments.
