Trump Initiates Simplifying U.S. Arms Exports, Reviewing Pentagon Procurement

The US president signed an executive order.

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to revise the rules for exporting military equipment. This was reported by Reuters on 10 April.

The document simplifies selling the products of US defence companies abroad. Without this, it is impossible to supply arms to key allies effectively and reliably, said White House adviser Will Scharf during the signing ceremony in the Oval Office.

Trump's executive order instructs the Pentagon, the US State Department and other agencies to overhaul the system for international sales of US weapons of arms, with the provision of job creation incentives and revenue support for defence companies, among other things.

The new approach is expected to boost sales of companies such as Lockheed Martin, RTX (Raytheon Technologies) and Boeing, Reuters notes.

Under current US law, Congress has the authority to renegotiate export agreements depending on allied partnership status and sales volume, the report said.

In addition, on 9 April, Trump signed an executive order to overhaul the Pentagon's procurement system. The modernisation is aimed at enabling the Department of Defense to ‘adapt more quickly to new challenges’, Scharf explained. The order gives the head of the department two months to review the Army's procurement rules, including ‘first priority for commercial solutions.’
