A Russian and US citizen sentenced for transferring money to a Ukrainian charity has been released.
Russia and the US have held a new prisoner swap in Abu Dhabi, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing CIA Director John Ratcliffe.
Russia released Ksenia Karelina, a Russian-American citizen who was sentenced in Russia to 12 years in prison on charges of state treason. She made a $51.8 transfer to a Ukrainian charity, which then gave the money to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The states in exchange released Russian-German citizen Artur Petrov, who was arrested at the request of the US in Cyprus in 2023 on suspicion of smuggling microelectronics and money laundering.
The previous prisoner swap between Russia and the US took place in February. Moscow handed over Mark Vogel, a former US embassy official convicted for 14 years on drug smuggling charges who was working as a teacher at Moscow's Anglo-American School at the time of his arrest.
The United States handed over to Russia Russian citizen Alexander Vinnik, who was tried on charges of laundering at least $4bn through the BTC-e crypto exchange.
