France Deploys Troops On Border With Ukraine And Moldova

French soldiers carry out a mission in the area of the Focsani Gate.

French troops are mapping the area on the border between Romania and Ukraine and Moldova. These activities are carried out in case of a possible Russian invasion.

This is reported by Figaro.

“The Romanians call this area the Focsani Gate. For Romanian and allied headquarters, this is the route along which the Russian army could invade Romania,” explains Colonel Jerome, who last year commanded a detachment of about thirty soldiers stationed in Romania.

According to the French colonel, historically this is a “passing route” from the east. Therefore, when NATO revised its defense plans to counter the Russian threat, the maps needed to be updated and a French regiment offered its services and the Romanian mapping agency joined the operation.

“The allies needed to have up-to-date knowledge of the expected future battlefield. We needed to know where the weapons systems would be deployed, where the targets of interest would be, and also to consider the issue of operational mobility, document roads, constrictions,” the colonel adds.

The publication notes that in wartime, “some things cease to be obvious”.Thus, jamming of geolocation signals has also become systematic on the battlefield, which threatens the accuracy of Western weapons, such as, for example, CAESAR.

“Our weapons are very dependent on geolocation. We will have to help our troops continue to maneuver despite the loss of the geolocation signal. By comparing the terrain with already established strongholds, they will be able to continue to strike. They will be able to accurately determine their location and will have a better chance of hitting the target, knowing where they are firing from,” the military tells journalists.

What is the Focsani Gate

The map of Romania, which is at the disposal of the French military, shows the relief in three dimensions. It shows the Carpathian mountain range forming an arc across the centre of the country. The town of Cincu, where the French army has stationed 1,000 troops in response to an invasion of Ukraine after 2022, lies to the west of the mountain line. On the other side, the plain slopes down to the hills of Moldova, with the Danube River flowing slightly south, opening the way to Ukraine.
