Finland Introduces Serious Restriction For Russians

It concerns real estate.

The Finnish Parliament unanimously approved a government law prohibiting Russian citizens from buying real estate in the country, the Finnish Ministry of Defense reported on April 11.

The adopted amendments prohibit people from buying real estate from countries that “are waging an aggressive war and may pose a threat to Finland’s security,” Yle reports.

Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen said in February that the amendments do not directly mention Russia, “but in the current security situation, this affects the Russian Federation, its citizens and companies.” According to the minister, the law currently only concerns Russia, but it can be extended to other countries that meet the criteria.

The adopted law makes an exception for Russians who have a permanent residence permit in Finland or citizenship of both Finland and Russia. They will still be able to own or purchase housing, the country's defense minister noted.

The Finnish Ministry of Defence said that Russia poses a long-term threat to security in Europe and that real estate is a form of hostile influence, Yle reports.
