New footage has emerged.
On the morning of Sunday, April 13, a mysterious incident occurred at the Sakmarskaya Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHP) in the Russian city of Orenburg, which provides heat to about 80% of the city.
New footage is available on the Telegram channel “Ukraine 365.”.
Eyewitnesses reported a powerful explosion at around 5 a.m. local time, after which the plant was engulfed in flames. Parts of the city lost electricity.
Panic-fueled rumors began to spread in local chat groups, claiming that the CHP had been attacked by drones. Some so-called "eyewitnesses" even said they heard the buzzing of UAVs before the explosion.
However, the real cause of the incident turned out to be rather mundane. According to Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM), the explosion and fire at the Sakmarskaya CHP were the result of a “short circuit at a transformer substation.”
Problems at the plant are not surprising, given that it was commissioned 60 years ago and its technical condition, by all appearances, leaves much to be desired.
The CHP is located in the northern part of Orenburg’s Dzerzhinsky district. It supplies about 80% of the city’s heating needs, including heating and hot water. It plays a key role in the city’s energy supply.
