Poland Launching Own 155-mm Artillery Shells Production

The project could be a breakthrough in ensuring the independence of the Polish army from foreign supplies.

Full production of 155mm artillery shells will be established in Poland for the first time. The project is being realised in cooperation between the Military Institute of Technical Armament and the PGO company, and could be a breakthrough in ensuring the independence of the Polish army from foreign ammunition supplies, «Polskie Radio» reports.

The shells will be used primarily for Poland's Krab and K9 self-propelled artillery units. According to Andrzej Bulanowski, vice chairman of PGO, the project is now at the prototyping stage:

‘This is a truly breakthrough moment for the Polish defence industry. We are achieving full autonomy in producing heavy artillery ammunition - the most important 155 mm calibre. This means independence from geopolitics and licence restrictions. We are becoming self-sufficient,’ Bulanowski emphasised.

Field testing may start as early as this year, and serial production will start in Gorlice (Małopolskie Voivodeship) in the middle of 2025.

155 mm shells are called ‘queens of the trenches’ on the front in Ukraine. Their consumption numbers in the thousands every day, and they have become the symbol of modern artillery warfare. This calibre is standard in the armies of NATO countries, and it is actively used in key fire support systems in Poland.
