Belarusian Ministry Expecting Call From The Moon Or Mars

The “secret” of the 375 telephone code has been revealed.

On April 16, 1995, exactly 30 years ago, Belarus first used its international telephone code 375. First Deputy Minister of Communications and Informatization Pavel Tkach told how it happened.

“In 1960, one of the UN agencies, which later, by the way, became the International Telecommunication Union, proposed introducing unique codes for each country in order to streamline the rapidly developing telephony. Thus, code 1 was allocated for Central North America, 3 and 4 for Europe, and the USSR received code 7, which now belongs to the Russian Federation,” Tkach said.

When Belarus gained independence, it joined the European codes and received its own — 375.

“A fun fact: there is a legend that initially 9 codes were allocated (from 1 to 9), and 0 was left for future interplanetary communication. So if you get a call with the code 0, it might be a call from Mars or the Moon!” the Ministry of Communications joked.
