He was the country's president from 2011 to 2016.
On 15 April, a court in Peru sentenced the country's president in 2011-2016 Ollanta Humala to 15 years in prison for receiving illegal campaign funds. This was reported by Reuters.
The 62-year-old former president was found guilty of taking bribes from Brazilian construction company Odebrecht, now known as Novonor and undergoing bankruptcy proceedings.
The investigation began in 2016 and the trial lasted three years. According to the investigation, Humala received illegal funds during his presidential campaign when his opponent was Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of another former president.
Humala has described what is going on as political persecution.
The court will still continue to read out the full verdict and the final document will appear on 29 April.
Humala's lawyer called the verdict ‘excessive’ and vowed to appeal, saying the prosecution had failed to prove the illegal origin of the funds.
The ex-president will be sent to prison immediately after the verdict is announced in full. He is expected to serve his sentence at a police base specially built to hold VIP prisoners.
A court in Peru also sentenced Humala's wife Nadine Heredia to 15 years in prison on 15 April, but she has sought asylum at the Brazilian embassy in Lima and has been granted protection along with her younger son, Reuters wrote. Her lawyer says the woman has cancer.
Earlier, former Odebrecht executives admitted in court in Peru that the firm had financed ‘virtually all of the country's presidential candidates’ for the past 30 years.
Former President Alexandro Toledo (he was head of state from 2001-2006) is already in Peruvian prison because of Odebrecht money, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
In 2019, Peru's former president (2006-2011) Alan Garcia shot himself when police tried to arrest him on suspicion of corruption linked to Odebrecht.
