The Russian Permanent Representative began to contradict Trump.
A ceasefire in Ukraine is currently impossible, said Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya. “We attempted a limited ceasefire regarding energy infrastructure, which was not observed by the Ukrainian side. In these circumstances, talking about a ceasefire at this stage is simply unrealistic,” Nebenzya told journalists following closed consultations of the UN Security Council, The Moscow Times writes.
In a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on March 18, US President Donald Trump proposed that Russia and Ukraine refrain from mutual strikes on energy infrastructure for 30 days.
On the eve of the UN Security Council meeting, Trump said that he expects Russia to respond to his proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine “this week”, that is, until April 20. “We'll see what happens. <…> But we want this [the war] to stop. “We want the death and killing to stop,” the American president said.
Earlier, an Axios source reported that Trump could impose new sanctions against Russia if Putin does not agree to a ceasefire by the end of April. According to Fox News, the White House is considering tough restrictions against the Russian “shadow fleet”. Trump himself previously said that he could impose tariffs of up to 500% on countries purchasing Russian oil.
