Washington believes that the issue needs to be resolved very quickly.
US President Donald Trump will abandon mediation to achieve peace between Russia and Ukraine if he does not see progress in this direction in the coming days, said Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“We are not going to continue this work for weeks and months. So we need to decide very quickly — and I am talking a few days — whether this is doable in the next few weeks. If so, then we are in. If not, then we have other priorities that we need to focus on,” Rubio said after a meeting with EU and Ukrainian representatives in Paris (quoted by Reuters).
He stressed that Trump is still interested in concluding a deal, but is ready to move on if he does not see immediate signs of progress. During his election campaign, the American politician promised to end the war within 24 hours of returning to the White House. After taking office, he moved the deadline to April-May because he was facing obstacles in the settlement.
Rubio emphasized that US President Donald Trump is “devoting a lot of time and energy” to the issue of achieving peace in Ukraine, but there are also many other important things happening in the world.
“We want to do everything we can to be helpful. We had a good meeting yesterday. I think the French, the British, the Germans were very constructive, very helpful. And hopefully we will have another meeting early next week. Then we will have more concrete answers about how close we are to making progress. But it will not last forever,” he added.
