President Andrzej Duda called for containing Russia.
Poland supports the idea of access to the French “nuclear umbrella” to protect against a potential Russian threat. This statement was made by Polish President Andrzej Duda in a commentary to Bloomberg.
The Polish leader also called for seeking access to American nuclear weapons.
“I believe that we can accept both solutions. These two ideas are neither contradictory nor mutually exclusive,” he emphasized.
At the same time, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said in parliament that Warsaw may try to gain access to nuclear weapons. According to him, “serious negotiations” are underway regarding the proposal of French President Emmanuel Macron to use Paris's nuclear potential to protect European allies.
According to the publication, Poland's desire for nuclear deterrence is added to Warsaw's ambitious rearmament program, spurred by Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Poland also secured financial support from the European Union to strengthen its borders with Belarus and Kaliningrad.
Journalists recalled that Duda had repeatedly called on the United States to deploy American nuclear weapons on its territory.
“NATO's role is to counter Russia's aggressive behavior. How is NATO going to respond to this? My answer is very simple. We propose that you extend nuclear cooperation to our territory as well,” Duda noted.
