This could happen very soon.
A full ceasefire in Ukraine could be agreed in London. This could happen very soon.
This is reported by the New York Post.
“This week in London, we want to make a decision on a full and comprehensive ceasefire,” the official told the publication.
Then, according to him, the intention is to hold (discussions — editorial note) with the Russians.
“And then say: 'Okay, this is your best and final offer' to find out where both sides are. And once we get there, then the next steps will be determined,” the officials interviewed by journalists added.
And they insistently noted that US President Donald Trump “is ready to leave the negotiating table without Moscow's support, shifting responsibility for the conflict to America's European allies.”
Working on a Ceasefire Line Plan
Meanwhile, according to NYP, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and his colleagues will “work through the remaining concerns they have about the peace plan,” most of which revolve around where the ceasefire lines will be.
“I think part of their concern is around land… specifically what they call ‘de jure’ and ‘de facto,’” an administration official told the article’s authors.
He said that “de facto” means Ukraine recognizes that the Russians are occupying the land but isn’t saying they’re going to give it up forever, while “de jure” means Ukraine recognizes that the Russians are taking the land and Ukraine will never see it again.
A Carrot for Moscow
The article notes that in order to bring Russia to the negotiating table, Special Representative Steve Witkoff may offer Moscow a “carrot” in the form of sanctions relief and possibly the unfreezing of frozen assets.
“The carrot for the Russians is how do we ease the sanctions that are currently in place against them. Another question is what do you do with the frozen Russian assets (we're talking about $300 billion — editorial note) that are sitting in Brussels,” the officials explained.
However, experts interviewed by NYP argue that this would contradict Trump's previous threats to increase financial pressure on Moscow — something he has so far failed to do.
“Trump has been very tough on the Ukrainians, cutting off intelligence support and military aid when he didn't feel he was getting the immediate 'yes' he wanted from the Ukrainians to agree to a cease-fire,” said Alex Plitsas, an expert at the Atlantic Council.
Why Russia Continues to Violate Ceasefire Agreements
For their part, the Russians continue to violate every ceasefire agreement they have ever signed, refuse to agree to a reasonable ceasefire, and continue to launch ballistic missile strikes against Ukraine.
“This is essentially an attempt to thumb their nose at US President Donald Trump and embarrass him on the international stage by refusing to agree to the basic terms of a ceasefire that he promised he would provide,” Plitsas added.
The White House, in his opinion, must take tough measures against Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, who “has not been held accountable for his actions in the last 25 years.”
“That’s why we continue to see this kind of behavior (from Russia), so if we don’t change that behavior, we can expect to see more of the same from Putin, not less,” he said.
