The protests in Massachusetts had a particular resonance, where protesters combined participation in events marking the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolution with criticism of the current administration.
One of the participants said that Americans once again have to “fight for freedom” in their own country.
Protests also took place near Tesla showrooms, where activists accused Elon Musk of collaborating with Trump and reducing the role of the federal government.
Organizers said they were protesting attacks on civil rights, attempts to close government agencies, cuts to social programs, and the strengthening of executive power.
In Anchorage, a colonial reenactor in colonial clothing held a sign that said “No Kings Allowed,” while a man next to him held up a piece of cardboard that read, among other things, “The Feudal Era Is Over.”
In Washington, protesters gathered near the White House, and in Columbia, South Carolina, hundreds of people came out with signs defending social security and democratic values.
