The Kremlin showed wild cynicism.
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s announcement of an “Easter truce” was sudden, terse, and one-sided. It vividly demonstrated “Russia’s wild cynicism” when it comes to peace, according to CNN’s chief international security correspondent Nick Paton Walsh.
According to him, the Kremlin’s announcement came at a time when Washington had said it wanted confirmation in the coming days that Moscow was serious about peace. So for Russia’s supporters, it looked like Putin’s “nod” to Trump.
“But the sudden announcement is so riddled with practical flaws even before it’s out that it will likely simply be used by Putin to bolster his false narrative that Kyiv doesn’t want to end the war. It would be a logistical nightmare for Ukrainian forces to suddenly, immediately stop fighting on Putin’s orders. Some frontline positions could find themselves in the middle of intense clashes,” he stressed.
The correspondent also added that disinformation will be a big challenge, confusing troops about how to observe the ceasefire, record violations and respond to them. And about what to do when the suddenly declared ceasefire ends.
He noted that a real ceasefire requires negotiations with the opponent and preparation for it to come into force.
“The sudden rush seems aimed solely at satisfying the White House’s demands for some indication that Russia is ready to stop fighting. This will likely feed Trump’s sometimes pro-Moscow narrative of the conflict. It could also create difficulties for Ukraine, when it is inevitably accused of violating what Washington may consider a goodwill gesture from Moscow,” Walsh says.
