Musk, Bessent Fight In White House In Front of Trump

The reason was fighting over control of the US Internal Revenue Service.

American billionaire Elon Musk and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent exchanged heated arguments and scuffled over a major personnel decision by President Donald Trump.

This was reported by Axios..

The head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Elon Musk, and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had a public brawl at the White House in the presence of President Donald Trump and senior officials. The reason for the conflict was the fight over control of the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Last Thursday, 17 April, there was a violent verbal altercation between Musk and Bessent in the West Wing hallway. Witnesses described the scene as ‘wrestling for middle-aged billionaires.’

Musk became outraged over Bessent's interference in his staffing initiative, and the latter responded by accusing Musk of failing to keep budget promises and calling him a ‘Soros agent.’

The conflict began after President Trump appointed Musk's nominee Gary Shepley as interim head of the IRS on Wednesday, 16 April. Bessent, on the other hand, insisted on nominating his deputy Michael Folkender.

The argument got so out of hand that an aide had to physically separate the two officials.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, commenting on the incident, said that ‘disagreements are part of a healthy political process’ and reminded that all members of the team work ‘with the confidence of President Trump’.

The publication noted that this is not the first high-profile altercation involving Elon Musk - he has previously clashed with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and trade adviser Peter Navarro.

After the quarrel, Musk was subjected to massive criticism on social networks. However, the very next day, Bessent won - it was his nominee Faulkender who was approved as the head of the IRS.

According to Axios sources, neither side is planning to go for reconciliation. The White House Administration expects a new round of confrontation.
