The Kremlin's behaviour could lead to crushing consequences for the Russian Federation.
Russia is delaying the ceasefire proposed by the U.S. while simultaneously launching a massive call-up. Despite promises not to send recruits to Ukraine, it is raising doubts. The situation for dictator Vladimir Putin is worsening at the military and economic fronts, writes ex-British army officer Tim Collins in a column for The Telegraph titled ‘Putin Now In Serious Trouble’.
The Russian army is resorting to ‘cannon fodder’ tactics, using converted civilian vehicles. Ukrainian strikes have reached Russian airfields, destroying aircraft and air defences. There are mysterious attacks in Moscow itself, notably the destroying of a presidential limousine, indicating either effective Ukrainian sabotage or internal discontent.
Putin's allies are preoccupied with their own problems. China is focused on Taiwan, Lukashenka on holding power in Belarus, North Korea has failed to fulfil expectations, and Iran may be preparing an attack against the US/Great Britain base at Diego Garcia.
After the failed meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump, the situation for Ukraine looked complicated. However, if Putin disappoints Trump, it could lead to renewed arms shipments and tougher sanctions. Congressman Lindsey Graham called the possible measures ‘bone-shattering.’ Sanctions could extend not only to Russia, but also to its trading partners.
Supplies of HIMARS and ATACMS, which effectively destroy expensive Russian air defence systems, may resume. A senior Ukrainian source reports, ‘We have more targets than bullets.’
The systematic destroying of the S-300 and S-400 could force Russia to seek peace before June because of the depletion of its reserves. Tough sanctions would make it impossible to replace them.
If the White House makes such a decision, it will change the dynamics of the war. Trump is determined to end the conflict quickly. His frustration could be a serious problem for Putin, who should take this into consideration.
