European Parliament Calls For Strengthening Sanctions Against Lukashenka's Regime

The resolution calls for investigating the regime's crimes.

The European Parliament has adopted a resolution on Belarus by a majority of votes. The vote was held today, 3 April, at the plenary session in Strasbourg, reports a correspondent of the Charter97.org website

The European Parliament strongly condemns the persecution of Belarusians abroad by Lukashenka's regime.

MEPs note that ‘the growing cooperation of the Belarusian regime with the Russian security services increases the risk of coordinated repression, surveillance and hybrid threats on the territory of the EU.’

The lawmakers call for ‘pan-European legal support and protection for Belarusians in exile by simplifying procedures for obtaining visas, residence permits and temporary identity documents for those who have become stateless due to extraterritorial persecution.’

The deputies urged to ‘increase political, financial and technical support for independent media, human rights defenders, trade unions, and civil society initiatives operating in Belarus and abroad.’

The resolution called on the International Criminal Court to ‘expedite proceedings on crimes against humanity committed by the Lukashenka regime’ and demanded that EU member states prosecute such crimes through national proceedings based on the principles of universal jurisdiction.

The European Parliament ‘urges EU member states to impose additional sanctions similar to those imposed on Russia, especially against officials responsible for transnational repression.’

The resolution mentions the cases of Viktoryja Kulsha, Volha Mayorava, Alena Hnauk and Andrzej Poczobut as examples of torture or ill-treatment.
