White House Divided: Musk Goes Against Trump For The First Time

The billionaire condemned the new tariffs and the trade war.

A serious conflict appears to have emerged between U.S. President Donald Trump and his "right-hand man," Elon Musk. The billionaire publicly criticized the policies of the U.S. leader for the first time. Musk made an important statement during a broadcast on the Italian TV channel LA7, where he appeared alongside Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, reports Dialog.UA.

Musk criticized the trade war initiated by Trump. He emphasized the importance of free movement of goods for innovative companies like Tesla and expressed hope that the tariffs would be lifted as soon as possible.

"Both Europe and the U.S., in my opinion, should ideally move to a zero-tariff situation, effectively creating a free trade zone," Musk stated.

Earlier, on his social media platform X, Musk sharply criticized White House chief trade advisor Peter Navarro, who is considered the main architect of Trump's tariff policy.

"A Ph.D. in economics from Harvard is a bad thing, not a good thing. He [Navarro] has never built anything himself," the Tesla CEO wrote.

In early April 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed new tariffs on imports, including a 34% duty on Chinese goods, prompting retaliatory measures from China.

These developments led to significant fluctuations in the stock markets and had a noticeable impact on Musk's companies, particularly Tesla. Following the tariff announcement, Tesla's stock dropped by approximately 5%. This decline was driven by investor concerns over rising production costs and the potential decrease in demand for the company’s products due to trade barriers.
