This is part of the corps sent by the Joe Biden administration to the countries bordering Ukraine.
Senior officials of the US Defence Department are considering a proposal to withdraw 10,000 military personnel from Eastern Europe, delfi.lt has said.
According to sources, if the Pentagon accepts the proposal, it would add to fears that the United States is abandoning its long-time allies in Europe, who view Russia as a growing threat.
The units currently under consideration for withdrawal are part of the 20,000 troops the Joe Biden administration sent to Europe back in 2022 to strengthen the defences of countries bordering Ukraine after Russian Federation invaded it.
Specific numbers on withdrawing the contingent are still being discussed, but the proposal could involve withdrawing up to half of the US forces sent under Biden.
It is noted that internal discussions on reducing the number of US troops in Romania and Poland are taking place while President Donald Trump is trying to persuade Russian leader Vladimir Putin to agree to a ceasefire.
The Trump administration has previously made it clear that it wants European allies to take more responsibility for their own defence, allowing the US to focus its military resources on China and other priorities.
