German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is ready to meet with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. But only if the meeting would help end the war in Ukraine.

"If the need arises, if it would help to end this war, I am prepared to do a lot," he said.

But above all, Merz said, it was worth focusing on a ceasefire in Ukraine.

"We have to see if we can achieve the goal - a ceasefire - already at the end of this weekend," the chancellor added.
