Mertz In Kiev Warned Putin

The West is ready for a tough response.
New German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk arrived in Kiev on Saturday, May 10, on a visit to Kiev, UNIAN reports.
"We are calling for a 30-day ceasefire so that peace talks can be prepared during this time. Now the ball is on Putin's side and he must respond to this proposal," the chancellor said.
He warned that if the Kremlin does not agree to a ceasefire, the West is ready for a tough response.
"In case of refusal, there will be a serious tightening of sanctions and large-scale support for Ukraine - political, financial and military," Merz detailed.
He said the US and personally President Donald Trump support such an approach, probably because they are "losing patience" with Putin. In this regard, the chancellor emphasized that there is now a "surprisingly high level of agreement" between Europe and the US.
"If a ceasefire cannot be achieved, the US will tighten sanctions against Russia," Merz elaborated.
He also stated Europe's readiness to generally continue negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. But when asked about possible face-to-face talks with Putin, Merz was evasive.
"If the need arises, if it helps to end the war, I am ready to do a lot. But first we have to see if we can achieve the goal of a ceasefire after this weekend," Merz said.
Visit of Ukraine's allied leaders to Kiev
The four leaders of Ukraine's allied countries arrived in Kiev this morning. This is the first joint visit of the leaders of the four countries to Ukraine. They were met by Ukrainian officials at the train station.
On the eve of their trip to Kiev, Merz said that European countries had drawn up a declaration on a ceasefire in Ukraine, which in principle echoes in many ways the idea of U.S. President Donald Trump.
