The U.S. president made the statement ahead of talks with Beijing.
US President Donald Trump has proposed lowering duties for China to 80% ahead of trade talks in Switzerland scheduled for May 11. This is reported by Axios.
"An 80% duty on China seems about right! Before Scott B.," Trump noted on Truth Social, referring to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who is leading the negotiations with China.
At the same time, the country's Commerce Department released a statement condemning U.S. "abuses" of the duties.
According to the Associated Press, Chinese exports to the United States fell 21 percent in April, but overall exports rose as the country found other buyers for its goods.
In turn, Chinese social media accounts, which are closely linked to state media, suggested that China was ready for talks, but they would not necessarily mean concessions.
