Britain To Hand Over Five More Secret Anti-aircraft Systems To Ukraine

What is known about this weapon?

The UK has already transferred eight Raven anti-aircraft systems to Ukraine, which are now successfully shooting down Shahed drones. Another five such systems are being prepared for shipment to strengthen the Ukrainian air defense.

This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the British Forces Broadcasting Service video.

Britain has revealed details about the secret anti-aircraft systems that were transferred to Ukraine. The system is known to have been officially named Raven (Ukr. Kruk), although the designation Frankensam is also used.

What is known about Raven

According to the British Forces Broadcasting Service, the system itself was developed from an idea from the Royal Air and Space Force's Air and Space Centre in just four months, who proposed using the available Supercat HMT-600 base to mount ASRAAM short-range air-to-air missiles on it.

To create this system, the Royal Armed Forces specialists worked closely with MBDA UK, which is the designer and manufacturer of the ASRAAM missile, as well as Supercat, which is the manufacturer and developer of this modular vehicle.

When the Raven system appeared in Ukraine

The Raven first arrived in Ukraine

The Raven hit Ukraine in the spring of 2023, and since then, the system is known to have carried out more than 400 missile launches against targets like Shahed 136 drones. The overall effectiveness was 70%.

Today, the UK has already handed over 8 such systems to Ukraine, with a further 5 systems now being prepared for shipment to Ukraine.

British Forces Broadcasting Service also revealed that the training of Ukrainian operators consisted of 40 military personnel who familiarized themselves with the system and, after returning to Ukraine, became instructors to train other military personnel to use it.

How the Raven air defense system works

The primary means of engaging air targets in the Raven system is the ASRAAM air-to-air missile. It has a total weight of 88 kg and is capable of a maximum speed of Mach three.

The missile is estimated to have an effective range of up to 15 km when launched from the ground (25+ km when launched from an aircraft), and its 10 kg warhead ensures the defeat of most aerial targets - both drones and combat aircraft.

British Forces Broadcasting Service noted that due to the intensification of attacks on Ukraine, as well as complications in the supply of U.S. Patriot systems, the British system is becoming increasingly necessary for Ukraine's defense against Russian attacks.
