UEFA Have Allowed The Offside Rule To Be Changed

"Millimeter" offsides could be abolished.

UEFA is studying the possibility of changing the rule for fixing an offside position, in which goals will not be canceled because of "centimeters". This was stated by the organization's deputy secretary general Giorgio Marchetti, quoted by La Gazetta dello Sport.

"Millimetre offside creates inconvenience. A rule change is being considered where only significant body parts will be taken into account to avoid goals being canceled because of a few centimeters," Marchetti said.

The issue is being studied by FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which is responsible for the rules of the game.

FIFA's head of global development Arsen Wenger has previously suggested that the advantage should be returned to attackers and offside should not count as offside if any part of an attacking player's body is on the same level as the last defending player.

Players are currently considered offside if any part of their body, other than their arms and hands, is closer to the goal than the last opposing defender. According to Wenger, VAR has taken away the advantage of forwards even in controversial situations that were previously resolved in their favor.

Testing of the changed rule has been conducted in Italian youth soccer and will continue until a final decision is made, which is expected in 2026.

In the first Champions League semi-final match between Inter and Barcelona (3-3), the Italian club failed to win because of Henrikh Mkhitaryan's canceled goal - then part of the player's sock was offside.
