The world's perception of the United States has deteriorated markedly since the return of American leader Donald Trump to the White House. This is evidenced by the Democracy Perception Index (DPI) 2025 study, the results of which were published by the Alliance of Democracies Foundation on Monday, May 12.
According to the results, the world's overall attitude toward the U.S. collapsed from +22% in 2024 to -5% in 2025, which is lower than China's (+14%) and close to Russia's (-9%). The share of countries where the US is viewed favorably fell from 76% to 45% over the same period.
Commenting on the situation, former NATO Secretary General and founder of the Alliance of Democracies Foundation Anders Fogh Rasmussen admitted that he was not surprised by such a sharp decline in the US reputation. "President Trump has launched a trade war, scolded the president of Ukraine in the Oval Office, made allies feel vulnerable and enemies feel dared," Reuters quoted Rasmussen as saying.
