Russian Federation illegally used weapons against a passenger plane in July 2014 in Donbass.
The Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has held Russia responsible for the shooting down of passenger plane flight MH17 in July 2014 in Donbass. This was announced by the press service of the Dutch government on Monday, May 12.
The ICAO Council made the decision on the dispute initiated by the Netherlands and Australia in March 2022 against Russia over the shooting down of flight MH17 on July 17, 2014.
The decision also states that Russia violated the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation because it unlawfully used its weapons against the passenger plane.
The next step is to determine the form of reparations from Russia. First, the ICAO will oblige the Russian Federation to start negotiations with the Netherlands and Australia and facilitate this process.
Russia in the summer of 2024 announced the unilateral termination of participation in the dispute in the International Civil Aviation Organization.
Reminder, in July 2014 in the skies above the temporarily occupied part of Donetsk region was shot down a passenger Boeing 777 Malaysia Airlines, flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. All 298 people on board died.
