Russia has less than 48 hours left.
European countries along with the United States have decided to give Russia time before a possible meeting between Putin and Vladimir Zelensky in Turkey before imposing new sanctions.
The Bloomberg news agency reported this, citing sources familiar with the talks.
According to the publication, the U.S. side insisted during talks with European partners on Monday that it would give talks between Moscow and Kiev a chance before increasing pressure on the Kremlin. It will be decided on Thursday, with Russia having about 48 hours to come up with a coherent response.
Sanctions at the ready
If Putin fails to show up for his meeting with Zelensky or refuses an immediate ceasefire, Europe will insist on carrying out the threat voiced by Donald Trump: imposing tough economic sanctions against Russia. So far, the Kremlin has not said whether Putin will attend the meeting. Moscow is clearly trying to assess the situation, fearing dire consequences.
For the past two days, it has not been clear what further steps the Trump administration will take toward Russia. But according to US administration officials, options to increase pressure on the Kremlin have already been prepared. In a recent statement, Trump said that "the United States and its partners will impose additional sanctions" if Russia continues its hostilities.
New Sanctions Preparations
EU This week, the European Union also plans to back a new package of sanctions against Russia's shadow fleet of oil tankers and individuals involved in circumventing energy restrictions. The package could include measures against individuals and entities involved in disinformation and cyberattacks, as well as companies supplying Russia with arms parts.
Sanctions proposals against Litasco Middle East DMCC, the trading arm of Russian oil giant Lukoil PJSC based in Dubai, are likely to be rejected after objections from Hungary, two sources said.
Kremlin Remains Under Pressure
The Kremlin has not officially confirmed Putin's participation in the meeting with Zelensky at this time. Obviously, Russia fears increased sanctions pressure, but is trying to buy time by delaying decisions.
European countries are already ready to push for sanctions if the meeting does not take place. The US has not yet decided on a final plan of action, but does not rule out a tough response to the Kremlin's evasion of negotiations. Experts note that Europe has actually given Putin a last chance, but has made it clear: if he does not use it, a new package of sanctions will become inevitable.
