Republicans put Democrats in front of a tough choice.
Michigan Congressman Shri Thanedar on Tuesday, May 13, initiated a procedure that triggers the countdown for the House of Representatives to consider seven articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.
It was reported by Axios.
The motion commits the House of Representatives to decide on the issue by the end of this week, unless the document is withdrawn. The Republican majority in the lower house of the U.S. Congress is expected to either support or reject the resolution, which is likely to create political difficulties for Democrats, some of whom are not interested in an open vote on the issue.
The 29-page impeachment resolution accuses the head of state of obstruction of justice, abuse of power, corruption and "tyranny," among other charges. Part of the charges relate to the use of administrative resources, particularly the activities of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), as well as issues related to the president's personal finances and the receipt of emoluments.
In an interview with Axios at the Capitol, Thanedar said he had "some communication" with the Democratic Party leadership, but added that he did not coordinate with them. He said he "didn't ask permission, he just communicated."
"President Trump has conducted unconstitutional activities. He committed impeachable offenses, and I was obligated to fulfill my constitutional duty," the congressman emphasized.
