French Foreign Ministry: It's Time To Strangle The Russian Economy

The EU and the US must take stronger action.

After the European Union adopted the 17th package of sanctions against Russia, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said that we should focus on the new package to "strangle" the Russian economy. He said Europe needs to cooperate with the United States, where Congress has prepared devastating measures in case Donald Trump decides to pressure Russia, writes Reuters.

"We will need to go further as sanctions have so far failed to dissuade Vladimir Putin from continuing his war of aggression. Therefore, we must be ready to expand the devastating sanctions that could strangle Russia's economy once and for all," the minister said.

Journalists recall that the 17th package envisages sanctions against about 200 "shadow fleet" tankers, 30 companies, as well as 75 individuals and legal entities. Its formal adoption is expected next week.

Europe has threatened to impose new sanctions against Moscow if it does not agree to a ceasefire. However, officials and diplomats said there would be major political obstacles in the way of that, and also that stronger sanctions would need U.S. support to succeed.

Barro said he would hold talks with Senator Lindsey Graham on his sanctions bill against Russia at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Turkey. It would impose tariffs of 500 percent on countries that import Russian oil.

"Russia has found ways to circumvent the blockage imposed by Europe and the United States, so by closing the tap we will grab Russia by the throat," Barro said.
