Trump Met With Syria's New President For The First Time

The meeting took place in Saudi Arabia.

U.S. President Donald Trump held a meeting with Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa on Wednesday.

It was reported by Reuters.

The meeting took place in Saudi Arabia, where the U.S. president was on a visit.

In the meeting, Trump urged the Syrian leader to normalize relations with Israel.

He expressed hope that Syria would join the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco, which normalized relations with Israel as part of the U.S.-brokered Abraham Accords in 2020.

"I said to him, 'I hope you will join when things are settled.' He replied, 'Yes.' But they have a lot of work to do," Trump said.

Trump called his meeting with Sharaa "wonderful" and described the Syrian leader as a young, attractive man with a very strong background.

"He has a real chance to keep things under control," the US president said.
