Rubio Said Trump Is Open To Any Mechanism To End Russian Federation's War With Ukraine

The State Department chief spoke before an informal meeting of foreign ministers in Turkey.

U.S. President Donald Trump is open to any mechanism that leads to a just peace in the war between Russia and Ukraine.

This is reported by The Guardian.

Rubio, speaking ahead of an informal meeting of foreign ministers in Turkey, said the U.S. wants to see progress in the next couple of days, adding that there is no military solution to the conflict.

Meeting in Antalya

According to Bloomberg, uncertainty surrounding the Russia-Ukraine talks is casting a shadow over a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in the Turkish resort city, which began on the evening of May 14

The Antalya meetings between Rubio and European foreign ministers will offer a chance to rally on Ukraine after European leaders issued an ultimatum last weekend, giving Russia until May 12 to agree to a 30-day cease-fire with Ukraine.

European leaders said the U.S. supports coordinated sanctions against Russia if Moscow continues to strike Ukraine. But U.S. President Donald Trump has not publicly backed the proposed ceasefire date, and the deadline has come and gone with neither side ending hostilities.

"It is clear that Russia is only sending a lower-level delegation to Turkey for these peace talks," NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte told reporters before the start of the second day of meetings in Antalya.

He said he was "still cautiously optimistic" and that if the Russians also wanted to keep playing the game, some breakthroughs could be achieved over the next few weeks."

U.S. President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have signaled they will not attend what could be the first direct peace talks between Moscow and Kiev in Turkey in three years.

Putin on Sunday offered to hold direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on May 15 "without any preconditions."

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky challenged Putin to attend the talks "if he is not afraid," in an apparent attempt to show Trump who wants peace more - Ukraine or Russia.

The Kremlin said the delegation would include presidential adviser Vladimir Medinsky and Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin, but Putin's name was not on the list.

After the Kremlin's announcement of the delegation's composition, a U.S. official said Trump, who is on a tour of the Middle East, would not attend. The U.S. leader had earlier said he was considering attending.

It is also unclear whether U.S., Ukrainian and Russian officials will meet directly or if the discussions will take turns as they have in the past.
