The Kremlin is determined to continue the war in Ukraine.
The meeting between Zelensky and Putin has broken down. What the dictator wants
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is determined to continue the war in Ukraine at any cost.
This is according to The Times.
"Putin's decision not to participate in the talks was probably an implicit signal that he was not interested in meeting Zelensky, except to accept his surrender," the piece says.
According to the publication, Putin is not concerned about European leaders' threats to strengthen sanctions against Moscow and increase arms supplies to Ukraine.
"In fact, it was unlikely that even face-to-face talks between Putin and Zelensky in Turkey would lead to a sustainable cease-fire, let alone an agreement to end the war. .... There is no indication that Putin, a former KGB officer who has ruled Russia for 25 years, is willing to back down from what he sees as his historic mission to conquer Ukraine," the author writes.
It remains unknown how Trump will react to the failed meeting.
"Will he blame Putin for derailing an opportunity for peace? Or will he turn his anger back on Zelensky if he refuses to sit down at the negotiating table with the Russian delegation?" - adds the publication.
