John Healey called for tougher sanctions.
Russia's dictator Vladimir Putin should be forced to the negotiating table through further sanctions against Russia, according to British Defense Minister John Healey. "We must act, we must put pressure on Putin that will force him to negotiate," Healey said at a joint press conference with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius in Berlin on Thursday, May 15, reports DW.
"All the eyes of the world are on Istanbul today," Healey said in reference to expected talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Turkey. "This is a day that exposes Putin. Putin says he wants peace, but he has refused to abandon the cease-fire. He says he wants to negotiate, but he didn't even come to the conference he himself proposed," the British defense minister pointed out, noting that "Putin could end the war as early as tomorrow."
Boris Pistorius also expressed the opinion that it is Putin who holds the key to ending the war in Ukraine. "He could go to Istanbul and start negotiations, he could order a ceasefire, but none of that is happening," he said.
"You would think that Putin is trying to lead the American president around by the nose like a circus arena, but Donald Trump is unlikely to like that. It will probably lead to a change in the course that the American administration has chosen towards Moscow," Pistorius suggested.
