EU Wants To Agree With US On 'smashing' Package Of Sanctions Against Russian Federation

France's foreign minister revealed the details.

The European Union is preparing the 17th package of sanctions against Russia in case Moscow refuses to cease fire in Ukraine. The measures want to coordinate in coordination with the United States.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said this, France 24 reports.

In an interview with the AFP news agency, he mentioned the initiative of US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who warned of "smash-and-grab" sanctions against Russia. Barro emphasized that the EU is seeking to coordinate Sochi with the United States.

"We Europeans will accompany this American initiative with the 17th package of sanctions, and yesterday I promised Lindsey Graham that we will try to coordinate both the content and the timing of these two sanctions packages," the French minister said.

He also added that the only obstacle to peace in Ukraine right now is Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Kiev, meanwhile, has held up its end of the bargain.

"(Ukraine - ed.) accepted an unconditional ceasefire and yesterday agreed to a critical minerals deal with the United States. Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin's Russia has not made any effort, has not given any signals that it is ready for the ceasefire and peace that President Donald Trump seeks and that Europeans and certainly Ukrainians seek," he said.

The French foreign minister did not rule out the possibility that his country, which has expertise in rare earth metals, could conclude an economic agreement with Ukraine. Barrot also mentioned the discussions that are ongoing on this topic.

"We are considering the opportunities that are open to us and we will take advantage of them if they are in the mutual interests of France and Ukraine," the French foreign minister summarized.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said yesterday that 72 US senators support a bill for "crushing" sanctions against Russia and its oil and gas buyers if Putin does not start serious talks on ending the war in Ukraine.
