The pressure on the Kremlin will grow.
The State Department has confirmed the US readiness for tough sanctions against Russia.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to State Department Speaker Tammy Bruce.
In a press briefing in Washington, Bruce reminded that the US is not lifting any existing sanctions from Russia and recalled that Trump has already expressed his willingness to impose secondary sanctions if the Kremlin refuses to negotiate peace.
"Of course, we are not lifting any existing sanctions. The president wants all of our actions as a nation to be diplomatic - he clearly adheres to that approach. At the same time, he realizes that there are other regions of the world, other global issues that need attention," the speaker said.
Bruce also added that they will gradually abandon mediation in peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.
"The essence of the changes is that we remain involved (in the negotiation process. - ed.) and will help in any way we can. However, we will no longer promptly 'fly around the world' to participate in the negotiations. This is now the responsibility of the two sides (Ukraine and Russia - ed.), and it is time for them to present and develop concrete ideas on how to end this conflict. That will be their decision," Bruce concluded.
Reminder, yesterday, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said that 72 U.S. senators support a bill for "crushing" sanctions against Russia and its oil and gas buyers if Putin does not begin serious negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
