Washington is no longer satisfied with the role of mediator.
The United States will no longer play the role of a mediator in negotiations with Russia and Ukraine. Both sides have to reach an agreement themselves.
According to RBC-Ukraine, the speaker of the US State Department Tammy Bruce said this, citing her statement at a briefing.
"The essence of the change is that we will no longer, at the beck and call, fly around the world to hold meetings and mediate. We are still committed to engagement, we are willing to help in whatever way we can, but now it's up to the parties to the conflict," she said.
She said there are other regions of the world that need attention. "The Secretary of State (Marco Rubio, - ed.) has also made it clear: while our style will be different, the method of how we engage in this process will change. We will no longer serve as a facilitator," she added.
Answering a question whether the US is ready to impose secondary sanctions against Russian oil buyers similar to measures against Iran, the State Department speaker said US President Donald Trump "has reiterated his willingness to act in that direction."
"Obviously, we are not going to lift any existing sanctions. The president wants every action we take as a nation to happen diplomatically - and this reflects his commitment to that approach," she said.
U.S. Policy
Bruce said the idea of the previous U.S. administration as well was that Russia had not been spoken to for at least three years.
The approach of Trump and Rubio is that "you have to talk to people - face to face, one on one."
"I'm not going to guess at the substance of what President Trump and Putin might discuss. I know that President Trump is doing it for a reason, and that is to end the bloodshed and the carnage," she added.
