Human Rights Activists Report Mass Detentions For Participating In Protests

People are held in inhumane conditions in overcrowded cells.

The human rights center "Viasna" reports another wave of mass detentions on political grounds.

"Large numbers" of detainees are recorded in cases under Article 342 of the Criminal Code (organization and preparation of actions that grossly violate public order, or active participation in them). This article is used by the authorities to prosecute participants of peaceful demonstrations in 2020.

"This is due to the fact that in August this year the [five-year] statute of limitations for criminal responsibility for participation in protests expires," reads the report.

It is noted that the detainees "are still held in inhumane conditions in overcrowded cells" at the Center for the isolation of offenders in Minsk (1st Okrestina Lane).
