SBU Reveals Details Of Woman Recruited By Russian Federation To Assassinate Sternenko

The woman who shot Ukrainian volunteer Sergey Sternenko was recruited by Russian special services. She had been following the volunteer since mid-April.

The detainee was declared a suspect under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
h. 2 Art. 111 (high treason committed under martial law);
h. 2 of Art. 15, part 2 of Art. 27 and part 2 of Art. 115 (completed attempted murder for mercenary motives, committed by order, by prior agreement by a group of persons).
The detainee is a 45-year-old native of Odessa region, who lived in Kiev. She was remotely recruited by Russian security services in late 2024 when the woman was looking for "easy money" on the Internet.
According to the investigation, the woman first followed the specified vehicles, photographed them and gave them to a handler. Then she received other assignments, in particular, to make an improvised explosive device. She also changed her place of residence - moved to an apartment in the central part of Kiev.
Since mid-April, the suspect began to follow Sergei Sternenko, living with him in the same apartment complex. Later, she received the coordinates of the "hideout", where there was a pistol model PM and ammunition for it.
On the morning of May 1, the curator ordered the woman to commit the murder of the volunteer. The spy knew the make of the car and the approximate time when the volunteer would leave his home.
The moment Sternenko left the house, the Russian agent fired several shots, one of the bullets hitting him in the leg. The attacker was instantly detained on the spot by SBU officers.
She was found to have a phone with proof of working for Russia, as well as components for a homemade explosive device, which she kept in another apartment.
The detainee faces up to 15 years in prison. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.





Attempt on Serhiy Sternenko
On Thursday, May 1, well-known Ukrainian volunteer Serhiy Sternenko reported that he was attacked. He was wounded and underwent surgery. Later, Sternenko said that the bullet went through and did not hit any important organs.
SBU detained the attacker immediately, and also showed her photo. The security service specified that the woman shot the volunteer with a firearm.
The attacker has already been announced suspicion of high treason and attempted murder of a volunteer. Today, May 2, a court in Kiev will choose a measure of restraint for her.
