The Telegraph: Putin Has Miscalculated

Trump has changed his methodology and is now doing exactly what the Kremlin doesn't want him to do.

US President Donald Trump had hoped to bring about a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine by radically reversing Biden's position on the war, i.e. by getting tough on Ukraine and adopting a more conciliatory tone with Russia.

But, as The Telegraph writes, in recent days "Trump has become increasingly frustrated with Vladimir Putin's position, apparently realizing he is being led around by the nose." Now Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that the U.S. is changing "the methodology of how it will contribute," and as the publication notes, this is a major policy shift for the U.S. that does not play in Putin's favor.

Putin has miscalculated

As The Telegraph writes, it's likely that Putin actually wants a negotiated end to the war, given his country's desperate economic situation. That said, his apparent intransigence in response to Trump's ceasefire proposals probably represents a bid to force the US president to accept his maximalist terms.

But by "angering Trump in this way, Putin may have miscalculated." Not only did the new mineral deal give the U.S. a heightened economic interest in Ukraine's future, but Trump also said that if Putin did not agree to his peace proposal, he would flood Ukraine with weapons.

"This is exactly what Putin did not want. His priority was to prevent the continued supply of munitions from the West to Ukraine, which was one of his main conditions when considering what was proposed as an unconditional ceasefire," the publication emphasizes.

At the same time, to have a significant impact on the situation on the front, the volume of arms deliveries would have to be huge and also accompanied by a step-change in intelligence sharing, as well as a much more open mandate to use US-supplied weapons against targets on Russian territory:

An additional and probably even more effective tactic would be to tighten the screws on the Russian economy in a way that Biden has not done in three years of war, The Telegraph writes.
